DESCRIPTION

Let’s Take the Wrong Way Home is a collection of photomontage works representing landscapes that do not exist, an exercise in creation, destruction and after Vilém Flusser ‘playing against the camera’ to test the limits of what freedom means in engagement with the apparatuses of photography. Each piece is created by montaging image fragments into a new image form, a desire to unify distant realities and memories by using a combination of both the digital technologies of photographic remote viewing and Szczutkowska’s own analogue photographs.

Textual errors, caused by the speed of broadband, result in a hybrid of urban-rural, digital-analogue, human and non-human, present moment and remembered and the visual treatment becomes immersive to the representation of the subject matter of her work. Dislocation finds its place in between the images that emerge.

This publication was produced as part of the Inspirational Arts Award 2020, where each finalist received a TLP Edition of their graduate project. Izabela Szczutkowska represented the Technological University Dublin.
