Emily McEvoy and Tyrell McBride at The Library Project

ar April 07, 2025

With the kind support of the Arts Council of Ireland, PhotoIreland and Inspirational Arts present two ongoing works by RADAR emerging artists Emily McEvoy and Tyrell McBride.

Emily McEvoy, Untitled

Utilising the three-dimensional photograph as a vessel of connection, through the physicality of touch, Untitled brings the conventional photographic portrait into the realm of the sculptural. Capturing silhouetted images of the self and family, this series seeks to explore how our relationship with portraiture can be transformed or enriched when we consider the surface of our images. The work invites reflection and discussion on the boundaries of the photographic medium.

Tyrell McBride, Why Speak If I Have Nothing to Say?

Why Speak If I Have Nothing to Say? is a deeply personal currently ongoing project that delves into themes of desolation, disconnection, isolation, and the enduring hope for something better. The title originates from a question Tyrell’s therapist posed to him during a discussion about writing—a question that has stayed with him ever since: “Why speak if I have nothing to say?”

Tyrell states: “over the past two years, I have often felt like a passive observer, watching the world move around me without feeling truly connected to it. This sense of detachment left me grappling with a profound loneliness, as though I was merely existing rather than living. In the face of this emotional inertia, I decided to shift my focus inward and attempt to rebuild a connection with my surroundings. The project documents a series of solitary walks between Dublin and Gothenburg—two cities I’ve inhabited during this time of reflection—paired with notes I wrote down along the way. These notes became a way to process my emotions, giving shape to fleeting thoughts and adding a layer of introspection to the visual story. Together, the images and words create a dialogue between my inner and outer worlds, capturing moments of stillness, melancholy, and beauty that often go unnoticed in the quiet hours of the night and the early hours of the morning”.

Enjoy at The Library Project until 5th May a sample from these two ongoing projects by RADAR emerging artists Emily McEvoy and Tyrell McBride.

ABOUT RADAR

RADAR Research and Development Artist Residency is a new two-year-long residency programme for recent graduates of any Photography degree on the island of Ireland, from Diploma to Masters. The programme is aimed at providing adequate national and international opportunities for artists in order to engage with the broad arts context and consolidate their practice. RADAR is an ambitious evolution of the Inspirational Arts Photography Award first established in 2009, now expanding its remit to provide critical opportunities with the support of PhotoIreland.

The residency provides 5 graduates with advice, guidance, and professional support, as well as a range of resources and materials to ensure substantial progress in the artists’ practice and career development: a research space in Dublin at The Library Project, with access to the PhotoIreland Collection of photobooks and scanning facilities. In addition, participants will benefit from a selection of opportunities presented by PhotoIreland’s Creative Europe networks as well as key events in the Photography calendar, in Ireland and abroad. They are able to visit public and private events, thus gaining direct insight and experience from the artform’s arena.
