This is the first arts education book project in Hong Kong that focuses on artists as parents. Through delivering ‘Instructional Art’, the participating artists investigate the numerous possibilities of how parents can accompany, interact, communicate or observe their kids in artistic engagement. This project rethinks and affirms parents’ role in family education.
Instructional art is actually an open and participatory art form. Through execution, readers can understand and even create their own experience. Art historians generally place instructional art under the genealogy of ‘Event Scores’, which refers to an action-based event. Event Scores by Artist-Parents, however, is less of a piece of creative work than a diary that realistically records particular moments of each artist’s interaction with their children. Through the book, more imagination about family life is unfolded.
