Peter Granser's photo series shows selected buildings by the Bolivian architect Freddy Mamani Silvestre in El Alto, Bolivia. The 42-year-old Mamani calls his style "new Andean architecture". The shapes and colors are based on the indigenous Aymara culture and on the pre-Inca architecture, which can be found in the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Tiwanaku on Lake Titicaca. Since 2005, the autodidact Mamani has realised more than 60 projects in El Alto with his architectural office.
As Winston Hampel (AA School of Architecture, London) describes in his essay accompanying the publication, Granser focuses entirely on the buildings; there are no people to be seen in the pictures. By emphasising the narrow framing, the individual houses are completely removed from their context, time and space. What remains is structure and composition.
Peter Granser has been working with the medium of photography for over 20 years. His artistic works are part of important collections at home and abroad. His last book "J'ai perdu ma tête" was awarded the prize "The most beautiful German books 2014" and was also published by Edition Taube. Peter Granser (*1971, Austria) lives and works in Stuttgart.
