A collaboration between photographer Eamonn Doyle, designer Niall Sweeney and composer David Donohoe, AS IF is a new body of work that builds into a dreamlike articulation of the city and the psyche. In part a notional transposition of Walter Benjamin’s Arcades Project to the current moment — a single street as a central vein via which we move through multiple and multiply present internal and external worlds — the work stitches together thousands of still images with composed and recorded sound into a manipulation of shadows and perspectives, through movement, mark-making and the granularity of sound, light and time. Featuring actors cast from the street and shot both on a constructed set and on location on Parnell Street, Dublin, AS IF follows a number of monk-like figures that appear to be carrying out arduous sequences of action and ritual that strive towards some kind of resolution or revelation.
Born in Dublin in 1969, Eamonn studied painting and photography at college, graduating in 1991. He founded the internationally acclaimed D1 Recordings in 1996 and spent much of the next twenty years producing music and working in the independent music business.
Eamonn returned to photography in 2008 and his subsequent Dublin trilogy of work (i, ON, End.), formed the centre-piece exhibition at Rencontres d’Arles 2016. Fundación Mapfre Madrid staged the first fully comprehensive exhibition of his work in 2019. More recent bodies of work have taken him to the Atlantic coast of Ireland, the volcanic landscapes of Spain, and Japan.
Eamonn still lives and works where it all began, just off Parnell Street in Dublin, and music continues to feature as a fundamental aspect of his work, particularly with exhibitions and his collaborative film works. In 2024 Eamonn was awarded The David Octavius Hill Medal by The German Photographic Academy.
