Radical Fashion Exercises are bottom-up , unusual, innovative, striking, inspiring or otherwise radical assignments in the broad field of fashion as an expression, system, production process, image-determiner, and the clothing and textile industry. This book is a workbook for fashion teachers, designers, reformers, students or otherwise interested parties, with contributions from more than a hundred different designers, curators, artists, educators, fashion people, DIY-makers, students and other creatives. Radical Fashion Exercises challenges the user to approach fashion not simply as a commercial product, but as an extended historical, social and economic concept that is connected to everyday life, cooperation, the environment and future prospects.
The book is divided into nine themes: Imagining and Dreaming ; Going Outside ; Using the Body ; Working Together ; Reading and Writing ; Making, Finding, Tracing ; Re-viewing Images ; Digging Deep ; and Sourcing and Re-sourcing. These themes represent the different areas in which the fashion world and practice are undergoing change.
All exercises in this book challenge the current fashion world(s) and the systems, politics and economy around them, through interdisciplinarity, experimentation and aesthetics. The assignments can be performed in different contexts: from primary schools to higher education, from home to the (online) community, and from Seoul to La Paz. They are meant to stimulate the imagination of makers, viewers, teachers and students alike and to encourage new, urgent, educational and artistic fashion practices.
