DESCRIPTION

Showa35mm is an archive of 35mm film photographs taken in Japan between 1950-1989. It is named after the period of Showa era of Japanese history (1926-1989), in combination with the medium of 35mm photography which became popular in the post-war era.

This latter half of the Showa era is often referred to as the Japanese economic miracle (Kodo keizai seicho) due to the unexpected growth and progress seen in the country such a short time after World War II.

The restorations are done by Irish photographer and archivist Alex Sinclair. The original film is restored using chemicals, then extensive digital work is conducted to produce clear images of the golden age of Japan. Individual frames take between five and thirty hours to restore in an entirely manual process. Only original film photos are considered for inclusion in the archive, with the original negative or slide purchased to ensure the best possible restoration can be achieved.

For those that are not familiar with the project, TLP Editions is an ongoing collection, produced and designed by PhotoIreland, that presents work by contemporary artists in the form of uncomplicated publications. These are available through The Library Project in-store and online. All and any funds generated by the project go to producing more copies of the publications, ensuring we can keep promoting the artists and practices represented. These editions are regularly showcased and donated to international events and festivals, such as the Icelandic Photography Festival recently. In addition, TLP Editions also grace some important shelves and collections, including that of the Hasselblad Foundation Library and the Martin Parr Foundation.

You can find a list of all the TLP Editions here.

PhotoIreland is kindly supported by the Arts Council of Ireland to develop support projects such as the TLP Editions.
